$27m worth of Bitfinex-hacked bitcoins moved to an anonymous address

The Bitfinex-hacked bitcoins stolen in 2016 have moved again. This time the attackers moved more than $27 million in a matter of hours.

From the addresses linked to the hackers, nine transactions were made for a total of 2,550 BTC (~$27.8 million). The first transfer on the evening of July 27 was spotted by Whale Alert. The funds went to an anonymous wallet.

The hacker-linked funds were moved last on July 24, when the attackers transferred 260.71 BTC and 271.2 BTC. Prior to that, the hackers carried out 20 transactions ranging from 15 to 33 BTC for a total of over $4 million.

On May 22, from another wallet where the marked bitcoins are stored, 28.39124 BTC ($258,000) were withdrawn. On June 2 from the address where another part of the stolen funds was stored, another 77.644901 BTC (almost $800,000) was transferred.

The Bitfinex hack occurred in August 2016. In total, the attackers stole 119,756 BTC ($71.8 million at the rate at the time).

The exchange settled all liabilities after the loss of the bitcoins in April 2017. In mid-2019, Israeli police arrested two brothers suspected in the hack.

Earlier this month a court rejected Bitfinex’s appeal in the case of the disappearance of $850 million.
