75 Ethereum 2.0 validators slashed

During the night of February 2–3, 75 Ethereum 2.0 validators supported by the Staked service lost part of the ETH they had staked. According to the startup’s blog, the blog reports this.

Validators subjected to slashing also lose the ability to earn rewards.

Such sanctions are applied in situations that potentially threaten the network’s operation. They serve as a safeguard against malicious user actions. Validators subjected to this procedure will not be able to withdraw funds until such capability appears in ETH2.

What is Ethereum 2.0?

The reason, according to Staked, was to raise attestation metrics [simple_tooltip content=’Голосование валидаторов за предложенный одним из них блок’]аттестации[/simple_tooltip]. This was meant to increase the startup’s clients’ revenue.

To this end, over the past six weeks the service has rolled out a number of improvements. The testnet did not reveal any errors; however, when moving to real-world conditions, Staked validators began to reboot frequently. This led to the prohibited double-signing of blocks.

“The performance gains we achieved did not justify the additional risk that we inadvertently introduced,” wrote representatives of Staked in the blog.

In the blockchain explorer, the reason for the slashing is listed as “violation during attestation”.

Since the launch Phase 0 of ETH2 in December 2020, the number of slashed validators has reached 114.

Staked has implemented all necessary changes to prevent a recurrence of such situations in the future. Affected clients will be compensated for the ETH they lost and the ETH they would have earned.

In the past, the first Ethereum 2.0 validator was fined the very next day after the launch of Phase 0.

Earlier, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said that in the early months of the protocol’s operation, penalties would not exceed a quarter of the stake on the Medalla testnet.
