82 ASIC miners seized in Abkhazia’s villages

In the Ochamchira district of Abkhazia, employees of Chernomorenergo shut down two large cryptocurrency mining farms.

The owners connected the equipment to the power grids illegally. During a search, 82 ASIC miners were seized from the premises.

As reported, a ban on mining and the import of equipment for its operation was in force in Abkhazia until 31 March 2022.

In late March, the local parliament imposed fines and criminal liability for illegal electricity consumption used for cryptocurrency mining. The country is conducting large-scale raids to identify illegal miners. The equipment has been found, including among officials.

In July, protests erupted in several villages in Ochamchira district over the seized Bitcoin miners.

Soon after, Abkhaz authorities began negotiations with Russia on electricity supplies to secure conditions for mining.
