Optimism Distributes $39 Million in OP Tokens via Airdrop

The team behind the Ethereum layer-two network Optimism will distribute 10.3 million OP tokens (approximately $39.2 million) among 22,998 unique addresses.

This marks the fourth airdrop, aimed at rewarding NFT creators both within the project’s ecosystem chains like Base or Zora, and on the main Ethereum network.

“A great society needs artists. This airdrop is a thank you to creators and their ability to bring creativity to the network. Your contribution plays a vital role in the Optimism Collective,” states the distribution page.

The snapshot for the distribution was taken on January 10, 2024. The primary criterion for receiving tokens was the popularity of created NFTs, measured by the gas spent on transactions with the asset over the year.

Rewards were also given to authors of early collections (before January 1, 2023) and active network users after November 11. All qualifying points were summed up.

Applications for claiming tokens can be submitted until January 13, 2025.

Optimism conducted its first airdrop on May 31, 2022, followed by distributions on February 9, 2023, and then on September 18.

The developers reminded that OP holders can participate in project governance through the Optimism Collective DAO.

According to plans, Optimism has about 560 million tokens remaining for future distributions.

In the past 24 hours, the price of OP has fallen by nearly 2%. At the time of writing, the asset is trading at $3.76. The quotes are approximately 10% below the all-time high recorded in January (CoinGecko).

Back in September, Optimism distributed 48 million OP ($67.2 million at the time), which were unclaimed during the first airdrop.
