ChatGPT Initiates Conversation with User

  • The ChatGPT bot has developed the ability to initiate conversations based on previous interactions.
  • CEO Sam Altman plans to alter the startup’s corporate structure to attract funding with a valuation of $150 billion.

The ChatGPT bot initiated a message to a user based on prior conversations, according to a Reddit user named SentuBill.

The bot inferred that the user had their first day at school and inquired about the experience.

This new feature of ChatGPT is the result of an update that allows tracking and analyzing previous dialogues.

Update:

It turned out that ChatGPT initiated the conversation due to a bug. This was reported by journalists from Futurism citing comments from OpenAI representatives.

“We have resolved the issue that made it appear as though ChatGPT was starting new conversations. It occurred when the model attempted to respond to a message that was not properly sent and ended up being empty. As a result, the neural network either provided a generic response or used the bot’s memory,” the developers noted.

Previously, OpenAI introduced a new large language model, o1, trained with reinforcement learning to perform complex reasoning. The company claims the neural network can think, creating a long internal chain of thoughts during question analysis.

OpenAI to Alter Non-Profit Structure

To support and develop AI models, OpenAI is negotiating to raise $6.5 billion with a valuation of $150 billion. Without investment, the startup risks facing financial difficulties due to the costly training of neural networks.

Amidst efforts to attract funds, CEO Sam Altman informed employees that the startup’s complex corporate structure is likely to be changed next year. This was reported by Fortune citing sources.

The plan involves moving away from control by a non-profit organization, noted the magazine. This would make OpenAI a more traditional company.

In June, it was revealed that the firm is considering transitioning its management structure to a commercial business model.

According to Reuters, the new funding round will be conducted in the form of convertible bonds, and the $150 billion valuation depends on the ability of ChatGPT’s developer to change the corporate structure and lift profit restrictions for investors. Approval from the non-profit board, which includes Altman and eight others, will be required for this decision.

The agency reports that the major round could be closed within the next two weeks. If restructuring efforts fail, OpenAI will have to reassess the company’s valuation.

Discussions have been held with lawyers regarding the transformation of the non-profit structure into a commercial corporation, similar to competitors like Anthropic and xAI, the media noted.

Back in August, Elon Musk filed a renewed lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman breached the company’s founding agreement by prioritizing commercial interests over public good.
