Indiana Man Admits to $37 Million Cryptocurrency Theft

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has charged a 21-year-old resident of Lebanon, Indiana, with cybercriminal fraud resulting in over $37 million in cryptocurrency losses.

Court documents reveal that in February 2022, Evan Light was involved in hacking an investment holding company based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He stole personal information from clients and cryptocurrencies amounting to $37 million from nearly 600 victims.

Authorities stated that the hacker acted with one or more unidentified accomplices.

Light transferred the stolen cryptocurrency to various mixers and gambling sites.

The defendant has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. Each charge carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison. Restitution may also be ordered.

The accused is in custody awaiting trial.
