ConsenSys Launches Linea Association and Announces Governance Token

ConsenSys, the developer behind Linea, has established the non-profit Linea Association to foster the development and decentralization of its Ethereum-based L2 using ZK-Rollups.

The Linea Association will focus on three main objectives:

  • supporting technology;
  • market development;
  • advancing the decentralization roadmap.

The initiative includes the launch of the Linea governance token in the first quarter of 2025.

The non-profit will grant asset holders governance over the Linea Association’s activities related to core intellectual property and treasury.

Details are still being finalized.

The governance of the Linea Association will feature a multi-tiered structure, including:

  • a board of directors;
  • a general assembly;
  • staff reporting to an executive director;
  • token holder representation.

“We want to make this very open and transparent,” commented Linea’s product lead, Declan Fox.

He noted that the team has recently focused on decentralization from both technical and governance perspectives.

“Linea should belong to everyone and operate openly as a public good, like Ethereum,” explained Linea founder Nicolas Liochon.

ConsenSys founder Joseph Lubin emphasized his skepticism towards L2s that are overly controlled by a company or a very narrow group of participants.

Back in October, the Linea team introduced a protocol improvement proposal with decentralization solutions.
