Fourteen Years Since Bitcoin’s Creator Satoshi Nakamoto Vanished

On December 12, 2010, the creator of Bitcoin, known by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, made his last post on the BitcoinTalk forum.

His post addressed the issue of DoS attacks on the first cryptocurrency’s network:

“There’s more work to do on DoS, but I’m doing a quick build of version 0.3.19 before diving into more complex issues, if needed,” wrote the creator of the first cryptocurrency at the time.

Nakamoto noted that he and Gavin Andresen had previously made it clear that Bitcoin’s software could not be considered resistant to DoS attacks.

“This is one of the improvements, but there are still far more ways to attack [the network] than I can count,” he added, further describing the technical details of the upgrade.

The identity behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto remains unknown. It could be an individual developer or a group of people.

In November 2024, a hypothesis emerged suggesting that Satoshi did not disappear but became one of the largest Bitcoin whales. The author speculates that the creator of the first cryptocurrency withdrew from the public eye and began anonymously mining digital gold. Allegedly, he amassed a significant fortune, distributing it across numerous wallets created in 2010.

Programmer Peter Todd, who was unwillingly proclaimed the creator of Bitcoin in an HBO documentary, spoke about the harm of attempts to uncover Satoshi’s identity.

Earlier, Ava Labs CEO Emin Gün Sirer proposed freezing Satoshi Nakamoto’s coins due to risks associated with the development of quantum computing.
