Sui Holder Loses $29 Million in Hacker Attack
Cybercriminals breached an address on the Sui blockchain, stealing 6.27 million coins valued at $29 million, reported on-chain analyst ZachXBT.
According to him, the incident occurred on December 12, 2024.
The hacker moved the funds in three transactions, exchanged them for Ethereum via cross-chain bridges, and then sent them in parts to Tornado Cash.
Soon after the theft, the victim transferred their .sui domains to a new uncompromised address.
ZachXBT added that current limitations of Sui block explorers and blockchain analytics tools make tracking the stolen funds difficult.
Prior to the mainnet launch in May 2023, auditors CertiK discovered a critical vulnerability in the Sui blockchain. The HamsterWheel bug potentially allowed a malicious actor to seize nodes and conduct operations without processing new transactions.
Sui developers fixed the bug and paid $500,000 as a reward.
