Elon Musk’s xAI Unveils ‘Smartest’ Grok 3 AI Model

Elon Musk’s startup xAI has introduced the third iteration of its flagship AI model, Grok. The updated product boasts enhanced capabilities, including image generation and internet data analysis.

Update:

According to Musk, SpaceX will send Starship with Optimus and Grok to Mars, “if all goes to plan.”

The billionaire noted that the optimal window for flights between Earth and Mars opens every 26 months, with the next opportunity in November 2026.

Grok 3 competes with OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini. Unlike its predecessor, the new version was trained on a significantly larger dataset, utilizing 200,000 graphics processors. Musk claims that Grok 3 is ten times more powerful than the previous model due to increased computational power.

xAI has introduced two modifications of Grok 3: Reasoning and Grok 3 mini Reasoning, which “think” about problems similarly to “reasoning” models like OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSeek’s R1.

xAI claims that Grok 3 Reasoning surpasses o3-mini-high in several popular performance tests, including AIME 2025.

Reasoning and mini Reasoning are available in the Grok app, offering Think and Big Brain modes for tackling complex tasks. The new DeepSearch tool allows users to find and analyze information not only from the internet but also within the social network X.

Access to Grok 3 is currently limited to premium platform subscribers ($22 per month). To utilize all features, including additional DeepSearch queries and image generation, a SuperGrok subscription is required at $30 per month.

Update:

Grok 3 has become free for all users. It is available on iOS, in X, and on the website.

For users with paid X Premium+ and SuperGrok subscriptions, advanced features like voice mode are available.

In the coming weeks, xAI plans to add voice mode to Grok and integration via API for corporate clients. Musk also announced the release of Grok 2’s code once the third version stabilizes.

Earlier, on February 12, AI engineer Benjamin DeCracker left xAI due to disagreements with management. The conflict arose from DeCracker’s social media post on X, which included a ranking of AI assistants and mentioned the then-unreleased Grok 3 model.

Previously, xAI launched the Colossus cluster using 100,000 Nvidia H100 graphics processors. This took 122 days.
