The gadget allows users to make and receive calls, listen to music, take photos, record 3K resolution videos, and receive AI-driven insights about their surroundings.
The glasses are priced at $399 for the basic version and $499 for a limited edition with gold accents. Pre-orders will open on July 11 in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark.
In September 2024, Meta introduced an update to the Ray-Ban smart glasses, featuring real-time video processing with AI, enabling users to ask the glasses questions about what they see. Additional features included reminders, translation, and integration with music apps.
“We increasingly see examples of Ray-Ban usage: people wearing them on roller coasters, cycling, and in water, so we try to cater to them,” commented Alex Himel, Meta’s vice president for wearable devices.
The first version of Meta’s smart glasses, released in 2021, was a failure. However, the subsequent 2023 release gained widespread popularity.
“It was madness. The success caught us by surprise. Ray-Ban was supposed to be the last glasses without a display. We decided to make two attempts, and if it didn’t work, we’d focus on augmented reality,” noted Himel.
According to Bloomberg, besides working with Ray-Ban and Oakley, Mark Zuckerberg’s company has developed a roadmap for non-display glasses. A new release based on the Sphera design is planned, targeting cyclists and featuring a central camera.
Himel attributed the success of the Ray-Ban smart glasses to improvements in numerous “small details.” He noted that the sound and microphone quality surpassed some headphones, and video recording and AI functionality were enhanced.
Battery life remains the “number one complaint.” The new Oakley models can operate for eight hours on a single charge, with the charging case lasting 48 hours. Improvements are due to new battery chemistry and software optimization.
Back in July 2024, Zuckerberg stated his vision of a future where everyone wears AI-powered devices.
In May 2025, it was reported that Apple is working on new chips for smart glasses, more powerful Mac computers, and AI servers.
