OpenAI and Perplexity Challenge Google’s Dominance
AI startups are vying to capture a share of the search market from Google by offering their own browsers and encouraging users to abandon Chrome.

Perplexity has launched its own AI-powered web browser, Comet.

The key feature of the tool is an integrated AI search system that summarises query results.
Additionally, users have access to the AI agent Comet Assistant, designed to automate routine tasks such as handling emails and calendar events, managing tabs, and navigating web pages on behalf of the user.
The digital assistant is available on any page via a sidebar. It can view on-screen information and is ready to answer questions.
Initially, the product is available to subscribers of the Max plan for $200, as well as a small group of users from the waiting list.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported on OpenAI’s plans to release its own AI-based web browser in the coming weeks. Instead of the usual site navigation, some actions will be performed directly within an interface similar to ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s browser may feature the company’s AI agent Operator as one of its main functions, according to the agency.
Competing with Google
Users are increasingly shifting from traditional “Googling” to searching via chatbots. In May, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, Eddy Cue, stated that in April, the number of search queries in Safari decreased for the first time. He noted that the company is considering updating the browser to focus on integrating AI-based search systems.
AI startups are launching their own browsers to interact directly with users, bypassing Chrome—the most popular way to access the internet today.
While AI browsers remain “uncharted territory,” Google is already making strides in this direction. Recently, the company added several AI-based features, including AI Mode, which allows users to ask more complex questions and receive detailed answers directly in the search.
Previously, the company behind Arc, The Browser Company, announced a new web browser, Dia, focusing on AI tools.
In April, OpenAI made several changes to the ChatGPT Search engine to make online shopping more convenient and faster.
Back in May, Opera introduced a new web browser, Neon, with a focus on AI functionality. It can act as an AI agent—making purchases, filling out forms, and programming on behalf of the user.
