Hodlonaut: Craig Wright delays paying court costs after losing case

The Twitter user Hodlonaut said that two months after the Norwegian court had finally dismissed the suit filed against him by Craig Wright, he had not paid the court costs of $60,000.

The defamation claim against Hodlonaut, who in his tweets repeatedly called Craig Wright a ‘fraud’, was filed in April 2019 in the United Kingdom by the Australian entrepreneur. Later the High Court in London dismissed the claim, ruling that the United Kingdom had no jurisdiction over the matter.

This was followed by a string of controversial events involving Wright. The Australia-based CoinGeek published alleged photographs of Hodlonaut, and also reported that he planned to attend the Baltic Honeybadger conference in Riga, offering to search for him among people with rolled-up sleeves. One of Wright’s supporters also published his personal data publicly, including his home address.

In June 2019 Hodlonaut filed a counterclaim against Wright in Norway, where he resides. Wright’s suit was transferred there as well, and the district court and the Court of Appeal of that Nordic country dismissed it as well.

According to the ruling of 8 June 2020, Wright was to reimburse court costs of $60,000 within two weeks from the appellate court’s verdict. But, as Hodlonaut wrote today, two months have passed and he has paid not a cent.

Commenting on Hodlonaut’s post, Blockstream CEO Adam Back noted that in his case Craig Wright withdrew his defamation claim and fully paid his legal costs. Back added that the sum was considerably smaller at £6,666.

In my case Craig retracted in UK court and agreed to pay costs. It was less: £6,666. He paid almost immediately. I am supposing Calvin maybe paying for it all as a marketing expense.

In 2019 Wright filed a similar defamation suit against Bitcoin.com founder Roger Ver, alleging that Ver defamed him by calling him a liar and a fraud. The suit was also dismissed by the court.

A similar suit in the High Court of London was brought by Wright against Bitcoin podcast host Peter McCormack. The case is still pending.
