Russia cancels third sovereign Runet drill

Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development did not conduct the exercises planned for September 20 to ensure the resilience and security of the internet’s operation. This is reported by «ТАСС», citing the ministry’s press service.

There is currently active work underway on the federal project ‘Information Security’ and on regulatory acts in the information security sphere, including issues that were planned to be addressed during the exercises,” the Ministry of Digital Development said.

These are the third exercises cancelled this year. Planned for March and June were postponed due to the pandemic. In total, four such events were planned for 2020.

On September 20, the plan was to test countermeasures against attacks exploiting vulnerabilities in narrowband Internet of Things networks.

The ministry’s latest exercises were held in December last year.

The so-called ‘sovereign Runet’ law came into force in Russia on 1 November 2019.
