Google Translate Introduces Learning Mode and Conversation Translation

Google launches AI features for real-time translation and language learning.

Google has launched two experimental AI features in its Translate service: real-time conversation translation and personalized language learning exercises.

Users can select the Live translate tool to engage in conversations with another person using voice and screen translations. Initially, it is available in the US, India, and Mexico. The app translates and automatically switches between two languages.

“Building on the existing live communication experience, our advanced AI models now make live conversations easier in more than 70 languages — including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Google noted that the feature can recognize pauses, accents, and intonations, enabling natural conversation.

The other solution, Practice, allows users to learn and practice different languages. Translate creates personalized exercises to improve spoken language and listening comprehension.

The tool is designed for English speakers practicing Spanish and French. It also offers English lessons for Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers.

Practice caters to both beginners and advanced users. Personalized exercises adapt to the user’s knowledge level and individual goals.

“These updates are made possible by advancements in AI and machine learning. As we progress in speech processing and understanding, we can support more languages and improve translation quality and speed. With Gemini models in Translate, we have made a significant leap forward in multimodal translation and speech synthesis technologies,” the company wrote.

Back in August, Google announced a global expansion of AI Mode — a search feature that allows users to ask complex and clarifying questions for deeper exploration of topics.
