Google Trends: Interest in Bitcoin grows in Cuba

In the past 30 days, Cubans have shown increased interest in Bitcoin. In terms of search queries related to the first cryptocurrency, the country has moved into second place.

According to Google Trends, Cuba ranks second, behind Nigeria alone. The rise in Bitcoin’s popularity in the island nation is linked to tighter U.S. sanctions, as well as restrictions on payment platforms PayPal and Stripe.

South Africa, Cameroon and Ghana joined the top five countries with high interest in Bitcoin. The least likely to search for such queries are residents of Taiwan, Kazakhstan, and Japan.

Earlier, Cuban authorities studied options for using cryptocurrencies in national and international commercial operations to circumvent U.S. sanctions.

By August, the frequency of searches for the phrase ‘buy altcoins’ rose to the highest levels since January 2018. The popularity of the ‘buy bitcoin’ query, after the May halving, fell.
