Alleged Ethereum 2.0 deposit-contract launch code appears on GitHub

Code has been uploaded from the Ethereum Foundation developer Karl Beekhuizen’s GitHub account, which purportedly initiates the launch of the deposit contract for the second version of the Ethereum protocol. The post is titled “We have the ability to launch the main engine,” though there has been no official confirmation of the veracity of his words to date.

The deposit contract enables sending ETH from the existing network to ETH2, confirming the authority of the stakers. It is expected that the ETH2 genesis block will launch in six to eight weeks.

Suspicion arose on Discord that Beekhuizen’s account had been compromised.

In late October, developer Ben Edgington announced the imminent launch of the ETH2 deposit contract. The day before, he said that there were hours left until the event, not days.

Some saw only code that allows generating keys required to contribute funds to the ETH2 deposit contract.

Earlier, developers warned about the risks of fake deposit contracts. They advised users not to send coins until official information emerged.

Earlier, Ethereum 2.0 lead developer Danny Ryan said that the ETH2 deposit contract would launch in the first half of November.
