Value DeFi hacker who attacked protocol returns $95,000 to victims
An unknown malicious actor, having stolen $6 million in the Value DeFi protocol attack, returned part of the funds after user complaints left in the transaction comments.
One of the victims said she works as a nurse and lost all her savings because of the hack:
“I lost $100,000 during your attack. I hope you will return them to me. Think of the nurses who take care of you when you are sick. God bless you.”
The hacker returned her 50,000 DAI, stating in the comment that due to “the lack of knowledge and caution among people, sooner or later these funds will be lost anyway.”
Another 45,000 DAI was transferred to a student who said he had lost $200,000 hoping for high returns.
The Value DeFi protocol developers proposed to the hacker to keep coins worth $1 million as a bounty for the discovered vulnerability and return the rest.
However the hacker ignored the project team’s offer. As of writing, his Ethereum address contains crypto assets worth $5.3 million.
Earlier on 14 November, in a ‘complex attack’ on the MultiStables vault, an unknown attacker withdrew $6 million in DAI and USDC. For the attack, the hacker used an 80,000 ETH flash loan from the crypto-lending platform Aave.
