Venezuela arrests suspects in $2 million Bitcoin theft

Authorities in Venezuela have arrested two individuals who allegedly stole 101 BTC (over $1.9 million) from a local cryptocurrency exchange. Decrypt reports.

According to the Scientific, Criminal and Forensic Investigations Corps of the Venezuelan police (CICPC), 33-year-old Jose Manuel Osorio Mendosa and 34-year-old Kelvin Jonathan Diaz hacked Bancar Exchange’s servers.

By bypassing the platform’s security, they transferred the bitcoins and fiat funds to various accounts linked to them,» the agency states.

\n

In an attempt to cover their tracks, the hackers used encryption protocols, but the police were able to trace the transfers to the accounts of the firm Proinsa.

\n

CICPC is currently investigating the suspects’ ties to this firm.

\n

Earlier in November, police in Spain arrested a Dutch citizen of Colombian origin suspected of laundering €6 million via cryptocurrency.
