First validator slashed in the Ethereum 2.0 network
In the Ethereum 2.0 network, one of the validators lost part of their stake for a block equivocation. This was reported by lead developer Justin Drake.
A validator got slashed for a block equivocation, losing ~0.25 ETH. Do not try to run fancy validator redundancy that could bypass the slashing protections.https://t.co/gmhofdy7E4

The validator fined by 0.25 ETH on slot 6669. At the time of writing, his balance is below 32 ETH, so he cannot participate in block production.
In the last 24 hours, the validator participation rate stood at 96.99%.

Drake reminded that in the initial phase of Ethereum 2.0 launch it was decided to soften sanctions for isolated incidents. Over time the size of the penalty will return to 1 ETH.
Slashing penalties are designed to be lenient for isolated offences like these. Mass slashings are heavily penalised (if X% get slashed they lose ~3X% of their balance).
(Note also that the minimum slashing amount was reduced for genesis and will be increased back to 1 ETH.)

Earlier, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said that penalties are imposed for rule violations and malicious actions. In the first months of the protocol’s operation, they will not exceed a quarter of the stake size on the Medalla test network.
The launch of Phase Zero of Ethereum 2.0 took place on Tuesday, December 1.
