Bitcoin tops $21,000 as market capitalisation near $625bn

Bitcoin price rose above $21,300 (Bitstamp) to a fresh all-time high. Market capitalisation neared $625bn.

In a 24-hour period, Bitcoin gained about $2,000 in value.

Ethereum continues to show solid gains. Yesterday the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) announced the listing of futures on the second-largest cryptocurrency.

Unrealised gains for the software provider MicroStrategy from bitcoin investments stood at $396 million.

Earlier in December, the price of the first cryptocurrency breached $20,000 on all major exchanges. On the same day it emerged that British investment company Ruffer Investment had invested in bitcoin — it put in $744 million.
