Russian demand for GPUs used for mining rose 70% in December

Yandex.Market specialists recorded a rise in demand for GPUs used for mining cryptocurrencies in Russia. According to their data, at the start of December the number of clicks on listings for their sale rose by almost 70%, writes«Прайм».

Demand remained elevated throughout December. Russians were interested in GPUs 1.5 times more often than in December 2019. The peak came at the start of the month.

On average in 2020, Russians searched for GPUs costing around 25 thousand rubles, but from mid-December this figure rose to over 50 thousand rubles.

Yandex.Market noted that the drivers of December’s hype are “another cryptocurrency boom”, the release of new RTX 30XX-series production chips, which appeal not only to gamers but also to miners, and market shortages.

“Due to the pandemic, some productions are still not operating at full capacity, which provokes a shortage, and it is likely to last at least until June,” said Kirill Rodin, a representative of Yandex.Market.

According to him, the further situation depends on “the state of the cryptocurrency market and how quickly manufacturers can restore their capacities”.

Earlier media, citing experts, said that the rise in cryptocurrencies led to a shortage of video cards , which will last until mid-2021.
