Creator of ‘Rick and Morty’ sells debut crypto-art collection for $1.65 million in Ethereum

Justin Roiland, creator of the animated series “Rick and Morty,” sold his debut crypto-art collection for 1300 ETH (about $1.65 million) at the Nifty Gateway auction.

The collection, titled ‘The Best I Could Do’, comprises 16 works of art in the form of NFT tokens.

Each token carries unique embedded identification data. Most such assets are minted on the Ethereum blockchain, which guarantees the privacy of the owner.

Some of Roiland’s works were sold in editions of 100 copies, for example, ‘The Boy from the Wood’ ($10 each) and ‘In-Demand Bachelors’ ($100 each).

Other artworks sold for $150 000, $100 000 and $92 000.

The crown jewel of the NFT collection was a work titled ‘The Smintons’, a parody of ‘The Simpsons’.

The starting price for the lot was $14 999 – the amount for which the physical painting was sold at an eBay auction. The auction winner paid $290 100 for the NFT piece, making it the most expensive lot in the collection.

Part of the proceeds will go to help the homeless in Los Angeles.

As a reminder, the Nifty Gateway platform was launched in March 2020 by Gemini founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. It focuses on selling digital art.

The first lots presented on the platform included Michael Kagan’s collection, photographer Lyle Owerko’s work, and an image of MMA fighter Chris Cyborg.
