German authorities have confiscated 1,700 BTC but have yet to gain access to them.

German prosecutors have been unable for several years to access the 1,700 BTC seized from a fraudster, worth more than $63 million, due to the wallet password being unknown, Reuters reports.

The man has already served prison time, but he remains silent, refusing to disclose the key to authorities.

The police have repeatedly attempted to crack the wallet, the prosecutor for the Bavarian town of Kempten, Sebastian Murer, said.

“We asked him, but he did not answer. Perhaps he does not know,” he added.

The fraudster was sentenced to more than two years in prison for covert mining of Bitcoin on other users’ computers. At the time of his arrest, the value of the confiscated cryptocurrency stood only a fraction of its current value, after the new highs were reached, Reuters noted.

The prosecutor’s office is confident that the former owner has no access to the assets seized from him.

Earlier, German police confiscated Bitcoin worth €25 million from operators of an illegal streaming-video site.
