Fire at mining centre in Kazakhstan

On 14 April, a fire broke out in the premises of an unnamed mining data centre near Ekibastuz, according to the press service of the local Department of Emergency Situations (DES).

Mining equipment and wall cladding were on fire across a total area of 150 square metres.

“The company is located on the territory of the Ekibastuz GRES in the Sunny settlement, but it has no connection to the power plant. There was no threat of the fire spreading,” the DES said.

There were no fatalities or injuries. The extent of the damage is yet to be determined. The police will investigate the incident.

According to unconfirmed information, the facility may belong to the mining-hotel BTC.kz or to the MineBest company.

“The facility is located at GRES-2, inside the power plant. The estimated capacity is 40 MW. The preliminary version of the cause of the fire is welding work,” said a source familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity.

BTC.kz and MineBest did not respond to ForkLog’s request.

In early March, users of Blockchain.com temporarily lost access to wallets due to a fire at one of the company’s data centres. The outage was promptly resolved, and the exchange’s infrastructure and users’ funds were not affected.
