In North Ossetia, cryptocurrency miners detained over electricity theft worth 2.6 million rubles
Law enforcement authorities in North Ossetia have detained the owners of two cryptocurrency mining farms. They are suspected of stealing electricity valued at over 2.6 million rubles, according to the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to investigators, in January 2020 two residents of the republic purchased mining equipment and enlisted an acquaintance to install and service the equipment. To avoid having their electricity cut off, they bribed an employee of the power utility.
The farms were located in a rented property in the Zavodskoy settlement and in Vladikavkaz, at the residence of one of the organizers.
During the search, authorities seized 324 graphics cards, 36 motherboards, 64 power supplies, and a system unit.
Investigators opened a criminal case for property damage through deceit and abuse of trust.
Earlier in April, the leadership of a business incubator near St. Petersburg found a clandestine mining farm.
