Sotheby’s to auction one of the oldest NFTs

The auction house Sotheby’s, founded in 1744, will auction one of the oldest non-fungible tokens (NFTs) — Quantum — by artist Kevin McCoy.

Quantum was released in May 2014. According to Sotheby’s, this work is ‘the first ever created’ NFT.

The auction will also feature two other digital lots: the rare CryptoPunk #7523, released in 2017, and Anna Ridler’s The Shell Record.

The auction will run from 3 to 10 June. Bids are planned to be accepted in both fiat and cryptocurrency. The starting price is $100.

Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Sevens Foundation, a nonprofit that supports aspiring digital artists.

Earlier in April 2021, Sotheby’s staged an auction featuring the digital artist Murat Pak’s works as non-fungible tokens.

On 12 May Sotheby’s will auction a Banksy painting titled “Love is in the air”. Bids are planned to be accepted in US dollars, Bitcoin and Ethereum.
