Amazon offers cloud-mining services for the Chia cryptocurrency
The tech giant Amazon has unveiled a solution for mining the Chia cryptocurrency on its cloud computing platform Amazon Web Services (AWS). reports The Block.

In a brief guide, the company lays out the features of mining Chia and offers several ways to use its cloud system for these purposes:
\n\n\n\n
- Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud compute resources with high memory and high-frequency CPUs;
- Amazon Elastic Block Store storage with large-capacity disks and improved read/write performance;
- Large-capacity object storage and inexpensive space in Amazon Simple Storage Service for storing a large number of files.

The service is aimed at users in China. It is not known when exactly AWS began advertising this solution.

The original guide page on AWS’s site became unavailable. It also was not cached by Google.

Reddit users called the AWS proposal unprofitable. According to them, besides the fee for access to cloud storage, moving each Chia plot would cost the miner $9, given the $0.09 per gigabyte egress traffic charge.

The Chia Network, created by Bram Cohen, the author of the BitTorrent protocol, uses the Proof-of-Space and Proof-of-Time consensus algorithms.

The main Chia Network went live on March 19. As of now, according to Chia Explorer, the amount of disk space occupied by the cryptocurrency totals 3.07 exabytes — more than 190 thousand HDDs with a capacity of 16 TB each.

Amid the coin’s hype, miners created a local shortage of HDD and SSDs in China. According to a blogger, assembling a 200 TB farm would cost about about $16,000.

Specifically for Chia mining, Team Group released an SSD with a 12-petabyte write endurance.
