Lavrov: cryptocurrencies will inevitably play a significant role in international settlements

Cryptocurrencies will, in time, be used more actively in international settlements, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This was reported by ТАСС.

“I think the time will inevitably come when cryptocurrencies will play a very significant role, occupying a very significant share in international settlements,” said the foreign minister.

He also noted that Russia does not plan to abandon the use of the dollar completely, although it is aiming to dedollarise the economy.

Earlier, the Foreign Ministry allowed that Russia could have an alternative to the SWIFT cross-border payments system, driven by the rapid development of digital currencies and blockchain.

In the Bank of Russia believe that central bank digital currencies could compete with SWIFT.
