Nvidia chief outlines mining GPU prospects

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed hope that the company would be able to meet miners’ demand for GPUs using the CMP series, while keeping RTX gaming products available for gamers, according to VentureBeat.

At a press briefing during the online Computex conference, Huang was asked whether the company plans to continue artificially restricting the mining capabilities of top GPUs to curb demand from the mining sector.

“There is a reason why we reduced the hash rate. We want to manage and protect the supply of GeForce products for gamers. In the meantime we created CMP for the crypto community,” he said in response.

He believes that the combination of these two approaches will bring down the price of gaming GPUs to a reasonable level and supply them to gamers. He declined to say whether Nvidia would release two versions of the products — with restricted cryptocurrency mining capabilities and without restrictions.

“I believe that mining and cryptocurrencies will not disappear in the future,” he noted.

Huang stressed that the launch of the CMP series “effectively increased” the company’s sales, which were $150 million in the previous quarter and are expected to rise to about $400 million in the current quarter.

“My intuition tells me that we will have CMP and GeForce. I hope we can service miners with CMP”— he concluded.

The GeForce RTX 3060, launched into production in February by the company restricted its hash rate by about 50%. Enthusiasts bypassed the GPU’s protection and circumvented the restrictions, including with an official driver.

In May Nvidia said it would reduce the hash rate on the new GeForce RTX 3080, 3070 and 3060 Ti GPUs.
