Barkley will use the Strike payments app. He called digital gold the only way to preserve capital in the face of currency depreciation.

“We are seeing inflation and realise that we cannot preserve wealth. Therefore I plan to earn advertising revenue in bitcoin,” the athlete explained.

In his words, it is not possible to secure wealth for several generations of his family by relying on salary alone.

“When you see KD [Kevin Durant], LeBron [James] and [Tom] Brady and want to provide for generations, you can’t do that in the sport and in the position I play,” Barkley noted.

The footballer has participated in advertising campaigns for Toyota, Pepsi and Nike. According to journalist Joe Pompliano, Barkley earns more than $10 million a year from marketing.

Earlier in April 2021, Kansas City player Sean Kalkin became the first in the NFL to convert his entire salary to bitcoin. He described it as ‘not the wisest financial decision’, but added that he expected long-term investment returns.

In December 2020, NFL player Russell Okung began automatically converting half of his $13 million annual salary into Bitcoin.
