Cryptocurrency scammers stole 3.6 million rubles from residents of Volgograd region

The Volgograd region police warned of an uptick in scammers offering citizens a way to profit from cryptocurrency investments.

The perpetrators operate under a traditional scheme: they urge victims to create a personal account on a site under their control and transfer a small amount to a wallet.

Subsequently, the funds disappear from the account, the broker’s phone becomes unavailable, and the page hosting the personal account is blocked.

Over the past several months, the total loss from the scammers’ activities has amounted to at least 3.6 million rubles.

“The difficulty in solving these crimes lies in the fact that the servers and websites are usually located abroad, as is the majority of fraudulent brokers. The multi-tiered nature of ‘exchange pyramids’ makes locating those involved virtually an intractable task,” the local police said.

Earlier, a resident of Kemerovo turned to the police, from whom 700,000 rubles were stolen in a deal to sell mining equipment.
