UK approves AI development strategy to compete with the US and China

The UK government has published a ten-year plan to turn the country into a global “AI superpower,” aiming to compete with the United States and China.

The so-called National AI Strategy is designed to broaden the use of AI in national companies, attract international investment in British businesses, and prepare local technical specialists.

“Today we lay the groundwork for growth over the next ten years, using a strategy that will help us harness the potential of artificial intelligence and play a leading role in shaping how the world governs it,” said the Minister for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Chris Philp.

The strategy includes a number of initiatives. Among them is the launch of a new National AI Research and Innovation Programme, which should support efforts to improve coordination and collaboration among scientists.

Another programme aims to develop artificial intelligence beyond London and the Southeast — the region that currently concentrates most of the country’s companies and specialist organisations.

The government also plans to channel more investment and resources into industries that have not yet fully embraced AI, such as energy and agriculture. In addition, other initiatives are planned by the authorities.

A Cambridge AI researcher Beth Singler сказала, that the UK is increasingly seeking to identify specific areas where it can compete with the US and China after Brexit.

“But we must also be careful not to buy into our own narratives of Britain’s exceptionalism, because we have previously helped shape AI at key stages,” the researcher added.

In May, American senators proposed to invest $110 billion over five years in the development of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence.

In early March, the National Security Commission on AI published a report on preserving the United States’ technological dominance.

A week later, the Chinese government unveiled a five-year plan to accelerate the development of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

In 2020 China rose to the forefront of AI-related scientific publications.
