Colin McRae’s legendary Subaru rally car sold for $362,970 in Bitcoin.

An anonymous bidder paid 500,000 AUD (~$362,970) in Bitcoin at an Australian auction for a classic Subaru WRX driven by rally champion Colin McRae. News.com.au reports.

The car had long sat in a shed. Lloyds Auctions initially expected its price to be 15,000–20,000 AUD, until it emerged that it was a landmark vehicle.

The Subaru was prepared by the British firm Prodrive for the World Rally Championship, helping McRae win titles.

When the provenance of the auction car, which had been kept in excellent condition, was established, its estimated price exceeded 1 million AUD. However the top bid reached only half of that amount in cryptocurrency, about 7.6 BTC at the time of writing.

Lloyds Auctions began accepting payments in digital assets in late June 2021.

Earlier, the option to pay with cryptocurrencies was added by auction houses Sotheby’s and Phillips.
