Canadian firm accused of illegal cryptocurrency mining

The Alberta Utilities Commission (Canada) plans to fine Link Global for hosting mining farms without a permit, CBC reports.

According to the publication, in 2020 a Vancouver-based firm installed a 1.25 MW facility in Sturgeon County. It used an idle gas well owned by MAGA Energy without notifying the regulator.

The second facility in Kirkuolle did not meet environmental standards. Both farms operated illegally for 364 and 426 days respectively.

According to press reports, the Sturgeon site was relocated and Link Global filed papers to resume operations in Kirkuolle. However, the Commission said the company ‘has not complied with and still does not meet the conditions for exemption from the requirement to obtain a permit to operate the power plant’.

The Commission proposed fines totaling more than CAD 7 million (about $5.6 million).

In July, the oil and gas company Black Rock Petroleum Company agreed to host and operate up to one million miners on three sites in the Alberta gas-producing region.
