SBU officer suspected of extorting 7.5 BTC remanded in custody
One of the suspects in the kidnapping of a businessman and extortion of money from him by an officer of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has been remanded in custody. This was reported by the State Bureau of Investigation (GBR).
According to the GBR, by decision of Kyiv’s Pechersky District Court, his house arrest was replaced with custody due to persistent violations of the procedural obligations imposed on him.
Earlier, three SBU officers were suspected of kidnapping the entrepreneur and extorting $200,000 from him. It is reported that he was beaten and intimidated, and that the victim’s home was broken into and robbed.
According to the GBR, the detainee could not settle with the officers and instead agreed to pay 7.5 BTC. Earlier reports indicated a payout of 7 BTC.
In August 2021, by court order, the suspects were suspended from their posts and placed under house arrest. The suspects face up to 12 years in prison.
