FTX buys NFL Super Bowl ad to promote cryptocurrency

The cryptocurrency derivatives exchange FTX bought advertising time during the broadcast of the Championship Game of the NFL (the Super Bowl). Bloomberg reports.

Details of the advertisement and the deal size were not disclosed. Bitcoin exchange CEO Sam Bankman-Fried said the move was aimed at reaching a wide audience.

“Throughout this year we have said that cryptocurrency is safe, accessible and ready for mass adoption. We invite everyone to verify this […]. There is no larger and more widely attended event where such a message could be shared than the Super Bowl,” the publication quotes Fried.

The game is scheduled to be played on February 13, 2022 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The Super Bowl is the most-watched program of the year on American television — the previous game drew about 96 million viewers.

According to Bloomberg, in 2021 the cost of a 30-second advertisement during the broadcast was $5.5 million. For the upcoming game NBC raised the price to $6.5 million.

On October 27 the exchange announced a collaboration with MLB player David Ortiz. As part of the agreement he will also release several non-fungible token (NFT) collections.

In June FTX signed a five-year contract with MLB. Previously the company secured naming rights to the NBA Miami Heat arena, which was renamed to FTX Arena until 2040.

In June the crypto derivatives exchange agreed with esports team TSM on its rebranding worth $210 million. Later it announced plans to create an NFT marketplace focused on sports and entertainment.

In October, FTX closed a Series B-1 funding round of $420.69 million. The company’s valuation reached $25 billion.
