Barbados to open embassy in Decentraland metaverse

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, External Trade and International Business of Barbados signed an agreement with the Decentraland project to create a digital embassy in one of the largest virtual worlds.

The government is also finalising deals on similar agreements with Somnium Space, SuperWorld and other metaverse platforms.

\n\n\n\n

As part of the various projects, assistance will be provided in locating and purchasing land, the creation of virtual embassies and consulates, facilities to provide services such as electronic visas, and in building a ‘teleport’ that would allow users to move their avatars between different worlds.

\n\n\n\n

According to Barbados’ ambassador to the UAE, Gabriel Abed, the country plans to expand its activity beyond the plans to create structures and purchase land across various virtual worlds.

\n\n\n\n

\”The idea is not to pick a winner — the metaverse is still very young and new, and we want to ensure that what we are building can be carried across metaverses,\” he noted.

\n\n\n\n

The Barbados government sees opening an embassy in the metaverse as a unique diplomatic opportunity, added Abed.

\n\n\n\n

With the establishment of a diplomatic mission in the virtual world, Barbados will become the first country in the world to recognise digital sovereign land. It is expected to occur in January.

\n\n\n\n

The country has also hired a lawyer, as the embassy opening will create a number of unique precedents.

\n\n\n\n

Experts said the mission would comply with international law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

\n\n\n\n

\”Embassies are the starting point for obtaining a visa to enter a country or for visa-free travel. Imagine what that would look like virtually? And where could such an electronic visa take you?\” he concluded.

\n\n\n\n

South Korea’s capital authorities have decided to make Seoul the first major city with its own metaverse. It is planned to be used to host residents and cultural events.
