Polygon unveils scaling solution for Plonky2

The Polygon team unveiled a scaling solution for Plonky2 based on zero-knowledge proofs. According to the developers, it is an order of magnitude faster and more efficient than existing alternatives.

“Plonky2 is a recursive SNARK that is 100 times faster than existing alternatives and natively compatible with Ethereum,” the project’s blog states.

The key feature is that Plonky2 can verify other SNARK proofs.

“Suppose we want to prove that a batch of 1,000 transactions is valid. Creating a single proof to simultaneously verify 1,000 transactions would be costly and time-consuming. Instead we can deploy 1,000 machines and parallelly generate 1,000 proofs — one for each transaction. Then we can take these transaction proofs and aggregate them, creating a layer of recursive proofs, each of which verifies two others. We repeat this process until only a single proof remains, attesting to the 1,000 transactions,” the developers explained.

They say the recursive approach is fast, resource-efficient—and could be more decentralised.

Back in December, the project Polygon absorbed the Mir Protocol startup, which develops the Plonky2 protocol. The deal was worth $400 million.

Subsequently, Mir Protocol became Polygon Zero.

Earlier Polygon acquired the Hermez Network platform, which also specialises in L2 based on ZK-Rollups. The deal was worth $250 million.

At the same time, the project said it would allocate $1 billion to the development of related ZK-Rollups solutions.

In November, Polygon announced the Ethereum solution Miden based on ZK-Rollups and released its central component — a virtual machine that uses the zk-STARKs protocol as its underlying proof system.
