Kazakhstan authorities plan to license cryptocurrency miners

To address electricity shortages and bring shadow miners into the legal sector, Prime Minister Alihan Smailov instructed the development of rules introducing licensing for cryptocurrency mining. The announcement is on the сайте of the prime minister.

According to the figures, up to 2021 the growth in electricity consumption stood at 2%; last year this figure exceeded 7%. In the current situation, authorities blame the ‘grey’ miners.

Smailov instructed the ministries to address the problem, including by introducing licenses for this activity. Amendments to mining-related legislation are currently being drafted.

Earlier in September, Kazakh authorities proposed limiting electricity supplies to miners to combat shortages.

In January 2022, mining farms located in Kazakhstan were cut off from electricity, later the restrictions were extended. Supplies have not resumed to this day.
