Honduras’ Próspera zone declares Bitcoin legal tender

The Próspera economic zone in Honduras объявила, что Bitcoin и другие криптовалюты фактически действуют в качестве легального платежного средства в пределах ее юрисдикции.

The zone in the form of чартерного города is located on Roatán Island and possesses significant autonomy, including a private government, as well as its own fiscal, regulatory and legal systems.

“Próspera также принимает уплату налогов и сборов с использованием биткоина и позволяет резидентам строить ориентированный на криптовалюты бизнес, используя оптимальную нормативно-правовую базу, опираясь на стандарты AML и KYC мирового уровня”, — говорится в заявлении.

The jurisdiction offered Honduran municipalities and foreign companies the opportunity to issue bonds in digital gold to attract direct foreign investment.

The president of the promoter and organiser of the zone, Honduras Prospera Inc., Joel Bomgar подтвердил the news onstage at the Bitcoin 2022 conference. He added that investors can place funds in the organisation by purchasing security tokens on the Securitize platform.

The head of Madeira, the autonomous regional government on the island of Madeira in Portugal, also spoke in favour of legalising the first cryptocurrency. He did not outline concrete plans in this regard.

“I believe in the future and in Bitcoin,” he said.

In September 2021, the first cryptocurrency became legal tender in El Salvador. So far, no other country has followed the example of the Central American state.

Earlier, Salvadoran authorities planned to issue $1 billion in Bitcoin bonds on March 15–20, but delayed the issue while awaiting more favourable conditions in global financial markets.
