Epic Games closes $2 billion investment round to develop metaverses

The leading video-game developer Epic Games closed a $2 billion investment round. The funds will go toward metaverse projects.

The round was led by Sony, which provided $1 billion in financing. Another investor was KIRKBI, the owner of LEGO. Together with these companies, Epic Games plans to develop services for gaming in virtual reality.

“We are rethinking the future of the entertainment industry, and we need partners who can share our vision. Our company has found them in Sony and KIRKBI. Their funding will accelerate our work on building the metaverse and creating spaces where players can enjoy themselves with their friends,” said Tim Sweeney, CEO and founder of Epic Games.

Epic Games noted that as a result of the investments, the company’s valuation could rise to $31.5 billion.

A few days earlier, the game developer also announced a collaboration with LEGO. Its aim is to make metaverses “safe and fun for children and families” and to provide them with an “immersive, inspiring and engaging” experience.

By the end of March, Epic Games, together with Microsoft, had raised more than $50 million for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
