Researchers determine the average age of the most active Bitcoin investors in the United States

Nearly 40% of millennials living in the United States prefer to invest in cryptocurrencies rather than traditional financial instruments. This is evidenced by data from an online survey conducted by the investment company Alto.

The percentage of respondents owning digital assets is higher than the share of investors in mutual funds, and roughly equal to the number of holders of individual stocks.

More than 70% of millennial crypto investors with an individual retirement account hold coins in it.

People aged 25–40 lead in digital asset investments (39%). For comparison, in Gen X there were 32%, and among boomers — 14%.

Cryptocurrencies attract millennials due to their potential for high returns. However knowledge about alternative investments is limited across all generations surveyed – only one in five respondents understand them.

“In a world of conspicuous consumption, rapidly rising costs of living and growing debt from loans, millennials find it hard to invest in the future because they struggle to afford the present,” he said.

Among other high-popularity alternative investments for millennials are also real estate (77%), innovative funds (67%), venture capital and angel investing (55%).

The online survey was conducted among 2,000 non-retired residents of the United States. Of them, 1,200 were millennials, 400 — Gen X and 400 — baby boomers. All participants at the time of the survey held at least $2,500 in investment assets, and the minimum household income was $35,000.

Earlier in June, Forbes revealed that nearly 30% of the world\’s 65 wealthiest people invest in crypto assets.
