Greenidge Generation increases Bitcoin mining by 18%
In June, the American mining company Greenidge Generation Holdings mined about 230 BTC. This is roughly 18% higher than in the previous month.
The firm also raised its hashrate to 2.5 EH/s. As of the end of May, the figure stood at 1.7 EH/s.
As of 30 June Greenidge operated a fleet of 27,500 miners, with another 200 devices on order. About 24% of the company’s computing power is located at the facility in Spartanburg (South Carolina).
In early June, environmentalists and New York Assembly member Anna Kelles urged Governor Kathy Hochul to revoke Greenidge’s mining permit.
At the end of the month, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation rejected the pending application to extend the company’s existing operating permit. Greenidge said the Dresden site would continue to operate while the firm appeals the agency’s decision in court.
Earlier, both chambers of the New York Assembly backed a bill proposing a two-year moratorium on cryptocurrency mining that uses electricity generated from carbon-based sources. The measure awaits the governor’s signature.
According to statements by the sponsor of the bill, Kelles, it does not ban cryptocurrency mining and would affect only a limited number of energy facilities.
Greenidge operates mining at a hybrid power plant located on the shores of Seneca Lake.
In 2021 the company faced accusations of environmental harm. In 2022 the New York Supreme Court dismissed environmentalists’ claims against Greenidge.
