Hackers used a deepfake in a Binance listing scam

A group of hackers impersonated Binance’s CCO Patrick Hillmann in a series of video calls with representatives of cryptocurrency projects, promising to assist in listing on the exchange for a fee.

Calls using a deepfake of the executive were conducted on Zoom. The scheme was uncovered when crypto projects contacted Hillmann directly to thank him for his ‘assistance’.

The Binance CCO did not specify which crypto projects were targeted or what material damage the hackers’ actions caused.

He also stressed that the listing process on the exchange does not involve third parties, and applications are accepted only via a dedicated form on the official website.

Earlier in May, a deepfake of Elon Musk circulated on Twitter, in which he urged people to invest in a scam project.
