Fraudulent Elon Musk deepfake posted on South Korea’s government YouTube channel

On Saturday, September 3, unknown attackers hacked the government-owned YouTube channel of South Korea, renamed it SpaceX Invest, and streamed fabricated videos featuring Elon Musk discussing cryptocurrencies. This is according to Yonhap News Agency.

A staffer at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea told the agency that control over the channel was restored on the same day. As of writing, it remains unavailable. The official said the hackers managed to compromise the account credentials.

Google confirmed to Yonhap that the government channel had indeed been hacked. The company added that it is investigating the incident.

On Sunday, media reports also surfaced about the hacking of the Twitter account of PwC Venezuela. On the night of September 4, it began posting links to a site allegedly belonging to Ripple.

Data: Twitter.

The site promotes a ‘giveaway’ of XRP cryptocurrency. To obtain the asset, users are urged to follow a malicious link. At the time of writing, the phishing tweets remain on the PwC Venezuela page.

In May 2022, scammers distributed a Musk deepfake, in which he “urges to invest” in an obvious scam.
