India urges global standards for safe AI

The Indian Minister of Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, urged the development of global standards to ensure AI safety for people. The Register reports.

“We must all be concerned about harming users,” said Chandrasekhar at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) meeting.

He urged member states to consider developing a common framework of rules and guidelines for data governance, safety, and trust in relation to the internet and AI.

The body appears to agree with Chandrasekhar’s proposals. In a joint statement, the ministers agreed to oppose illegal and irresponsible uses of artificial intelligence and other technologies that do not align with common values.

Another resolution calls on expert groups with the participation of many stakeholders convened by GPAI to foster greater alignment between governments and the multilateral AI community.

The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence was established in June 2020. It was founded by G7 member countries, the European Union, Australia, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea.

In 2023, India will hold the presidency of GPAI.

In November, the European Commission published the final text of the AI regulation bill, aimed at regulating artificial intelligence.

In December 2021, China proposed international rules for the use of military AI to prevent a global catastrophe.

In September, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called to ban or temporarily restrict AI systems that threaten fundamental freedoms and privacy.
