Startup offers $1 million to use AI in U.S. Supreme Court cases

DoNotPay’s CEO Joshua Browder proposed that lawyers use AI in any upcoming case before the U.S. Supreme Court, offering to pay $1 million.

Under Browder’s plan, the attorney would wear AirPods and repeat in court exactly what the DoNotPay AI lawyer tells him.

‘[We] are making this serious offer on the condition that we reach an official agreement and comply with all the rules,’ the entrepreneur wrote.

According to Browder, the startup floated the idea, possibly illegal, to demonstrate the AI’s ability to handle complex legal cases.

For now, the startup is preparing to deploy an AI attorney to challenge parking tickets. Browder, however, intends to dispel hypothetical skepticism about the bot’s capabilities.

«У нас есть предстоящие дела в муниципальном (дорожном) суде в следующем месяце. Но ненавистники скажут, что “дорожный суд слишком прост для GPT”», — написал он.

Technically, it’s unclear whether AirPods are permitted in the Supreme Court. According to the court’s website, bringing any electronic devices into the courtroom is prohibited.

In Gizmodo’s piece, Browder said that accessibility rules permit circumventing this restriction. He also noted that the $1 million payout would be made only if the Supreme Court allows it.

‘We would never do anything against the rules,’ the entrepreneur said.

According to Browder, he has not yet found a lawyer interested in partnering. However, the entrepreneur has received “very serious offers” from several specialists handling federal and appellate court matters.

«We are doing this to send a strong signal to other courts to allow the use of artificial intelligence in their chambers», Browder said.

DoNotPay was founded in 2015 as a chatbot that helps with routine tasks such as cancelling subscriptions or challenging parking fines. Recently, the app uses the API of the GPT-3 language model.

Earlier, in September 2022, Clearview AI helped lawyers to locate a witness to the crash and exonerate the innocent.
