Jensen Huang Calls ChatGPT the Greatest Achievement in Computing

Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang described ChatGPT as an ‘iPhone moment’ for AI and said the chatbot ‘democratized computing’.

In response to a question from a student at the University of California, Berkeley, the executive shared his thoughts on the technology.

\n\n\n\n

Huang noted that in a short period the tool has drawn significant interest, and, he said, this is only the beginning of something much larger.

\n\n\n\n

«When was the last time we saw a technology so universal that can solve problems and surprise people so often?», Huang said.

\n\n\n\n

As examples, he cited the bot’s ability to compose poems, fill tables, perform SQL queries and write Python code.

«Of course it can’t do a lot yet, but someday in the future it will certainly be able to»,

Huang added.

Huang tried to demonstrate the breadth of the technology’s everyday applications. He said that, thanks to the API, the chatbot will be able to work with data-processing programs, photo and video editors, and tools for music and creativity.

The head of Nvidia also assessed the chatbot’s popularity. He said that in 60 days, more than 100 million people had used ChatGPT, underscoring the technology’s rapid diffusion.

Huang went further, likening the rise of conversational AI to the creation of browsers, JavaScript, the iPhone, or Spotify.

Reflecting on the evolution of computing over the past four decades, the executive noted increasing programming complexity. He said conversational AI models would help address this.

«You simply tell this thing to write a program for you, do something for you, automate something for you», Huang added.

He concluded that OpenAI’s greatest achievement is the democratization of computing.

In February, Bill Gates named generative AI ‘the most important’ innovation of our era.

In October 2022 Huang donated $50 million to Oregon State University to establish a science and education center.
