OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company would leave the European market if it cannot comply with the forthcoming AI Act. Reuters reports.

Before considering exiting, the startup will attempt to comply with the new rules.

\”The current draft EU AI Act is overly strict, but we have heard that the document will be withdrawn. They are still talking about it,\” Altman said.

In his view, the regulation needs additional amendments:

\”They could do a lot, for example, change the definition of general-purpose artificial intelligence systems. There are many things that could be revisited,\” Altman said.

At the same time, the head of the company said plans to open an office in Europe were under consideration. Poland is among the locations being considered.

Earlier, two key committees of the European Parliament approved amendments to the AI Act. The document regulates, among other things, generative artificial intelligence technologies developed by OpenAI.

In June, the project will be put to a vote in the European Parliament.

In late March the Italian regulator blocked ChatGPT in the country. The company was accused of \”unlawful collection of personal data\”.

In May, OpenAI announced the compliance with the regulator’s requirements that allowed ChatGPT to resume operations in Italy.

In the same month, Altman testified before the U.S. Congress and urged regulators to regulate AI technologies.
